Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP), also called IP telephony, is a method and group of voice calling technologies for providing voice communication sessions over Internet Protocol (IP) networks such as the Internet.

The broader terms Internet telephony, broadband telephony, and broadband telephone service refer to providing voice and other communications services (fax, SMS, voicemail) over the Internet and not over the well-known public switched telephone network (PSTN). Like the old telephone service (POTS).

 Overview

The steps and principles for initiating VoIP telephone calls are similar to traditional digital telephony, including signaling, channel configuration, digitization of analog voice signals, and encoding. Instead of being transmitted over a circuit-switched network,  digital information is packaged and transmitted as IP packets over a packet-switched network.

They transmit media streams using special media streaming protocols that encode audio and video using audio codecs and video codecs.

VoIP Protocols Include

  • Session Initiation Protocol (SIP),[4] connection management protocol developed by the IETF
  • 323, one of the first VoIP call signaling and control protocols that found widespread implementation.[5] Since the development of newer, less complex protocols such as MGCP and SIP, H.323 deployments are increasingly limited to carrying existing long-haul network traffic.[6]
  • Media Gateway Control Protocol (MGCP), connection management for media gateways
  • 248, a control protocol for media gateways in a converged network consisting of traditional PSTN networks and modern packet networks.
  • Real-time Transport Protocol (RTP) is a real-time audio and video data transport protocol.
  • Real-Time Transport Control Protocol (RTCP). ), RTP’s sister protocol that provides flow statistics and status information.
  • Secure Real-time Transport Protocol (SRTP), an encrypted version of RTP.
