A vending machine is a machine that dispenses products such as snacks, drinks, cigarettes, and lottery tickets to consumers after cash,  credit cards, or other forms of payment are inserted into the machine or otherwise transacted.

The first modern vending machines were developed in England in the early 1880s and dispensed postcards. Vending machines are found in many countries, and in recent times, special vending machines have been developed to offer less popular products than traditional vending machines.

The first known mention of a vending machine is found in the works of the Hero of Alexandria, an engineer and mathematician who lived in  Roman Egypt in the 1st century AD. His machine accepted coins and then dispensed wine or holy water.

After inserting the coin, it fell into a bowl attached to a lever. The lever opened a valve that released some of the water. The scale continued to tilt under the coin’s weight until it fell, and then the counterweight raised the lever and closed the valve.

Coin-operated tobacco dispensers were already available in English taverns in 1615. The automatons were portable and made of brass. In 1822, English bookseller Richard Carlile invented a newspaper publishing machine that distributed banned books. Simon Denham received British Patent No. 706 for his stamp dispenser 1867, the first fully automatic vending machine.

 Specialized Vending Machines

In 2000-2010, the specialization of vending machines became common. Vending machines have increasingly found their way into non-traditional areas such as electronics, fine art, and storytelling. Vending machines in this new category are commonly referred to as automated retail kiosks.

At a retail vending machine, consumers select products, sometimes through a touchscreen interface, pay for their purchases with a credit or debit card, then the product is dispensed, sometimes through a robotic arm inside the machine.

The trend toward specialization and proliferation of vending machines is perhaps most evident in Japan, where vending machines sell products ranging from toilet paper to hot meals to pornography and there is one vending machine for every 23 people.
